I’ve just been listening to some hilarious work by Aether Flyer, a musical comedy group who claim to have been around in the 1920s and to have somehow anticipated all the major modern styles of music such as drum n bass, free jazz, hip hop and rock. They use this strange vernacular called ‘Quatch’ where everyday things are given a surreal alternative names i.e. for brothel read ‘shame chamber’ or for a country bumpkin read ‘slovenly hero of the straw’. I really urge you to check it out if you like weirdness and the work of Lewis Carroll, Peter Cook, Chris Morris, Monty Python and the Bonzo Dog Band.

I've also found this excellent comedy MySpace called Gorgeouscretin. They do a mixture of topical, surreal and downright scary material. There are some songs such as ‘Can You Hear Norway In Your Sleep?’ which is like an early 90s Europop song about a shady international criminal. Some bits are monologues, like ‘Cryptic City Showcase’ in which a gravel-voiced promoter talks about ‘the show to end all shows’, featuring such luminaries as The Graduated Sneeze Orchestra, The Glenys Kinnock Nightmare and Lucifer Pillowtalk and his Goth love songs. There’s some great writing and great voice acting in there, so check it out!
